Perhaps it’s because it makes the car look like a bulb has failed when a blinker is on or perhaps it’s because it’s neither functional nor necessary. Here is a list and directions for most features that can be altered via VCDS or OBD11. Here are the items that I have altered, either with VCDS or OBDEleven:ġ) Disabled the horn beep on lock – The horn “confirmation” is annoyingly loud, especially late at night when coming home to a quiet neighborhood. Not only can VCDS and OBDEleven read and clear DTCs, they can also access and adjust plenty of the lesser-known features that are available in Volkswagens and Audis, commonly known as “convenience mods.” Dealerships usually won’t alter the factory settings because they either lack the training or because they don’t want to be liable for their mistakes or a customer’s misuse of the mod.
OBD11 VS VCDS ANDROID
One popular alternative that’s also affordable is an Android app called “ OBDEleven.” It’s not as capable as VCDS, but it can do what most novice users want. However, it’s also expensive, especially if one seeks a solution that works with a smartphone. VCDS is a very powerful tool that can do nearly every task of a dealer diagnostic tool. Today, VCDS and other tools bring far more capability, thanks to the marvels of modern automotive technology. When I first bought VCDS, I was only interested in reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) without having to drive 50 miles to my nearest VW dealer. Ross-Tech was the first to bring it to the people who prefer to avoid being fleeced by their VW/Audi dealers. In fact, VW had the FIRST on-board computer system with scanning capability way back in 1968! VW/Audi complied with the federal requirement to have OBD2-compatible codes by 1996, but they also kept their more-thorough diagnostics system (and continually improve it). You may be wondering, “Why not just buy a generic scan tool?” VW/Audi has used a proprietary diagnostic protocol that provides more information and scans FAR more modules than just the emissions-related items that were mandated by OBD2 in 1996. I was one of his beta testers in 1999 and have one of his more capable tools today. An enthusiast named Ewe Ross ( Ross-Tech) backwards-engineered a VW/Audi dealer diagnostic scan tool into something for enthusiasts. I can’t speak for what other auto brand enthusiasts are doing to “hack” their cars, but Volkswagen and Audi owners have some fantastic options.
